Landscape Photographer of the Year 2023 – in pictures
The 16th Landscape Photographer of the Year has been announced, with Mik Dogherty as overall winner of the £10,000 prize for After the Fire. Showing the tangled reminder of what was once a beautiful and intimate wood, the image provokes a feeling of profound environmental alarm. Aaron Northwood was awarded the young landscape photographer title for his serene image The Wishing Tree

Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England. “At the beginning of 2021, we were greeted with some rather dramatic slow flurries. Rarely do we see snow on the coast, so I decided to head out with my camera and face the elements. This is a bit of a classic composition of the lone boat ‘Content’ in Aldeburgh. The snow just adds something painterly to the image and softens the colours in the coastal properties.”Photograph: Daniel Ruffles/Landscape Photographer of the Year

“A top-down view of the stunning patterns and shapes at Seilebost on the Isle of Harris. I’d studied OS maps in detail before visiting here so had a good idea of what I wanted to shoot. It was then a case of finding the best ‘flow’ of water to balance the shot.”Photograph: Stuart McGlennon/Landscape Photographer of the Year

“After a large heath fire near Beaulieu in the New Forest national park, I’d recognised that to get a worthwhile picture I would need a misty morning to hide the large oil refinery complex that sits on the edge of Southampton Water and which would be very visible above the tree line in the background. Eventually that morning came and to add to the morning was a great sunrise. Some months later and most of these burnt remnants of gorse bushes and the lone tree have now gone.” (Category sponsored by MPB.com.)Photograph: Mik Dogherty/Landscape Photographer of the Year

Salen, Highlands. “Taken on a family holiday in west Scotland. This particular day we had perfect autumnal conditions: glorious rainbows, perfect mirror-like reflections and fantastic autumn colours all around. I was super-happy with my images from the day. As I was walking back along a jetty from photographing some boat reflections, this bladderwrack hanging on to the side of the jetty caught my eye. It looked a bit like a tree, with its beautiful olive greens fading into golden yellows at the tips, and became one of my favourite images from the whole trip.”Photograph: Daniel Ward/Landscape Photographer of the Year

“This was taken on the steam train while we were on holiday in Devon. These two ladies sat opposite us with their two dogs. I had my camera on the table and took a couple of pictures. I loved the way all four were looking through the window at the countryside passing by. I did, of course, email them a copy of the picture.” (Category supported by Network Rail)Photograph: Alexander Swyer/Landscape Photographer of the Year

young landscape photographer runner-up“Taken on a Duke of Edinburgh course while passing a blackberry bush, which was also a great snack after a few hours of walking. The image interests me as I find myself drawn to a certain drop in and among the complex web.”Photograph: Will Wrench/Landscape Photographer of the Year

This morning in November I decided to explore the entire area of the Quiraing and, of course. the famous needle was on my list.”Photograph: Julien Delaval/Landscape Photographer of the Year

highly commended, expressions and impressions of the landscapeHayle, Cornwall, England. “After a morning taking photographs on the beach at Hayle estuary, I captured this image while walking back along the coastal path to the car. The movement and texture of the dune grasses blowing in the breeze was extremely evocative and I felt totally immersed in the moment. I hoped that I had captured that feeling. Using intentional camera movement, I gently moved the camera in the same direction as the wind, creating a slightly abstract, painterly feel.”Photograph: Sally Mason/Landscape Photographer of the Year
